American Wind Energy Association

GF provided interior design and architectural services for American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) on its new 9th-floor headquarters at 1501 M Street in Washington, DC, including visioning, programming, space planning, design development, furniture selection and design, signage design, construction documents, and contract administration. The design reflects AWEA’s dedication to wind energy, incorporating the organization’s logo, colors, and core values through a palette of deep sky blue, grass green, tangerine, warm whites, raw steel, and wood tones in light oak and dark walnut. A 10-foot-tall spinning wind turbine and whimsical wind graphics in the reception area greet visitors and set the tone for the space.

The office supports a variety of work styles with “anchoring” neighborhoods that include open and private meeting areas, teaming spaces, and phone booths of various sizes. A quiet room provides a distraction-free retreat, while the breakroom functions as multiple meeting/dining environments or one large event space, featuring flexible seating and custom reclaimed-wood bar tables. State-of-the-art reconfigurable conference rooms adjacent to reception allow for in-office or virtual collaboration with industry members and policy advocates.

Designed to achieve LEED® Gold certification, sustainable strategies included selecting materials with high recycled content, salvaging and reusing elements from the previous space, low workstation panels to maximize daylight flow, daylight harvesting, and wind power offsets. Over 80% of regularly occupied spaces receive natural light, creating an energizing yet calming environment that supports collaboration, connectivity, and AWEA’s mission.
