ATCC – American Type Culture Collection

GF provided comprehensive interior design and architectural services for American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) on its new headquarters expansion in Manassas, VA, including visioning, programming, space planning, design development, furniture selection and design, signage design, construction documents, and contract administration. The project delivered a workplace that embodies ATCC’s culture of scientific innovation, collaboration, and professionalism.

The design employs a restrained material palette of crisp grays and whites, accented with rich purples, vibrant pinks, teal, warm oak veneer, and black highlights, integrating ATCC’s brand, mission, core values, and corporate commitments throughout the space. The main reception atrium features 30’ ceilings and abundant natural light, with an adjacent gallery showcasing company artifacts and a custom timeline celebrating ATCC’s 95-year history. A monumental stair within the gallery connects the first-floor conference center to the second-floor offices, fostering daily collaboration and human connection.

Branding throughout the space draws from ATCC’s mission, “Credible Leads to Incredible,” expressed through split-screen imagery pairing credible laboratory materials with their global impact. The first-floor conference area houses the boardroom, formal and informal meeting rooms, training rooms, and phone booths, all equipped with advanced audio-visual technology for global collaboration.

The second floor accommodates 135 staff with workstations along the window line for maximum natural light, supplemented by open meeting areas, private lounges, multi-size phone booths, and formal conference rooms. Height-adjustable work surfaces, floor-to-ceiling glass in enclosed offices, and a forward-facing workstation layout ensure ergonomic support, visual connection, and a 6-foot separation standard.

Though not LEED-certified, sustainable design strategies were incorporated, including recycled rubber wall bases, reclaimed wood, high-recycled-content carpets and fabrics, zero-VOC paints, acoustic ceiling tiles, LED lighting, and daylight harvesting for over 95% of regularly occupied spaces. The design achieves a modern, collaborative, and brand-forward workplace that supports ATCC’s mission and daily operations.
