GF designed the 40,356-SF headquarters for the Donohoe Companies with a focus on clean, sophisticated aesthetics and functional flow. The palette features warm whites, beige marble, classic walnut, and stainless steel accents, complemented by architectural details that allow daylight to permeate the space. Donohoe’s brand, logo, and corporate colors were integrated throughout the design.
A central monumental stair serves as the main focal point in the reception area, supported by a single steel stringer with cantilevered treads extending nearly four feet, giving the impression of floating steps. Behind the stair, a two-story, four-sided feature wall narrates Donohoe’s 135-year history, starting with the Capitol to highlight the firm’s DC roots.
The 6th-floor breakroom, located at the base of the stair, includes multiple zones with lounge seating, café tables, and custom bar-height counters. The central work area is two-thirds open, team-based studio space, with one-third enclosed offices. Floor-to-ceiling glass in all offices maintains visual connections to adjacent open areas while maximizing natural light. Additional collaboration zones of various sizes support impromptu conversations and meetings, promoting connectivity while maintaining privacy.
