Michaels: Chelsea

GF transformed a historic seven-story building in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood into a 35,000 SF Michaels flagship arts and crafts store. Originally built in 1901 as the Adams Dry Goods department store, the project converted existing office space, landlord storage, and a central atrium into a vibrant retail environment.

The design preserved the building’s historic character while introducing modern elements, including a grand escalator and curved glass atrium ceiling. High ceilings, expansive windows, and a spacious layout create an inviting atmosphere for shoppers. Located in the Ladies’ Mile Historic District, the store contributes to the area’s dynamic retail corridor and serves as a notable example of adaptive reuse in urban retail.
