The design genesis for Xi’an Xibali Village explores patterns found throughout Chinese culture, art and history. The inspiration came from the patterns found in the craftsmanship found in ancient Chinese woodworking and frame making for the home. Window frames and door frames define the way one experiences a building both inside and outside. These openings connect users to the most fundamental necessities for the occupant- light and air. Intricate latticework, geometric patterns, framing and structure of the historic Chinese building create beautiful shadows, provide privacy, tell a story and allow the building to be intensely expressive on the most detailed level.
