MUSC Basic Sciences Building Renovations

GF provided design services for the phased renovation of several floors within the Basic Sciences Building at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Downtown Charleston. Multiple schematic design options were developed to provide flexibility in programming and layout decisions.

The scope included updates to staff and faculty offices on the first floor, and renovations to lab, classroom, and lecture spaces on the second, third, and fifth floors. Technological improvements such as integrated electronic displays, along with new finishes and furnishings, modernized the learning and working environments. Construction was carefully phased to minimize disruption and ensure the building remained fully operational throughout the project.

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) engaged GF to also conduct a feasibility study and subsequently provide full construction documents for the renovation of an existing lecture classroom into a flexible, project-based learning environment.

The redesigned space supports both traditional lecture-style teaching and small group collaboration. Completely wireless, the classroom features front-of-room projection as well as monitor connectivity at each worktable, allowing for dynamic, interactive learning. The renovation reflects MUSC’s commitment to evolving pedagogical models and enhancing student engagement through adaptable, technology-integrated spaces.
